Relation Between Periodontal Disease and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB), April 23, 2014 – Princeview Dental (PrinceviewDental.com), one of Etobicoke’s premier dental clinics, is reacting to a study that claims periodontal disorders can be a determinant for cardiovascular disease.

“Any time a new study comes out that can benefit society and potentially save lives, it’s going to be an exciting time,” says Dr. Janice Mummery, founder of Princeview Dental. “As professionals, we always have to be cautiously optimistic in any findings, but there’s nothing wrong with being enthusiastic with a study like this, which is the largest of its nature.”

The study was conducted by the European Society of Cardiology and included over 15,000 chronic coronary heart disease patients. It summarized that patients with symptoms of periodontal disease, such as bleeding gums or loss of teeth, acted as common indicators for cardiovascular disease. “The findings of the study can potentially aid medical professionals in better determining which patients are at greater risk of cardiovascular disease, enabling dental specialists to play a preventative role in the battle against it,” Dr. Mummery explains. “All things considered, this is a step in the right direction and should reinforce the necessity of proper dental care.”

However, Dr. Mummery observed other variables in the study that she notes should be considered, including that 70% of the participants were former or current smokers. This means that smoking is certainly a factor that can’t be ignored. (Source: Ibid.)

“Princeview Dental has been providing quality dental care in the Greater Toronto Area for over 20 years,” she concludes. ”We understand the importance of being current with important findings that are relevant to dental services and aim to continue our commitment to being a top dental clinic in the community.”
