Detailing the Safety of Fluoride in Water

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB), June 6, 2014 – Princeview Dental (PrinceviewDental.com), one of Etobicoke’s premier dental clinics, is releasing its expert opinion on a study by the government of Saskatchewan asserting the safety and health benefits of having a percentage of fluoride in drinking water.

The study suggests that 0.7mg/litre is the amount of fluoride needed in water to gain the health benefits. There has been much debate over the years concerning the safety of fluoride in drinking water, but the overwhelming majority of governing bodies still agree that fluoride is safe and promotes healthy teeth.

“Despite all of the controversy that seems to be surrounding the true effects of fluoride in water, the positive impact of having it in drinking water has been positive,” says Dr. Janice Mummery, founder of Princeview Dental. “It is still deemed safe by organizations such as Health Canada, the Canadian Dental Association, the Canadian Medical Association, and the World Health Organization.” (Source: “Community Water Fluoridation - Common Questions,” Government of Saskatchewan Health web site; http://www.health.gov.sk.ca/Default.aspx?DN=7d4df43c-3e21-49cf-9ef2-4b1feca2b4fd, last accessed May 21, 2014.)

Dr. Mummery explains that the main benefit of having fluoride in water is that it prevents tooth decay, with people residing in areas that include fluoride in their water having 20–40% less tooth decay. And the benefits extend to people of all ages; older people are keeping their teeth longer and younger people are experiencing better overall oral hygiene.

“The municipal government in each locality should be able to let residents know if the amount of fluoride is at the recommended levels,” Dr. Mummery concludes. “Safety is not an issue and the health benefits are undeniable. Princeview Dental supports the use of fluoride in drinking water as a means of promoting tooth health and preventing cavities.”
