How Sleep Deprivation Affects Your Oral Health

How does sleep affect oral health? If you think about it, lack of sleep can have an adverse effect on our physical, mental and emotional health. Our bodies depend on a good night’s rest to “reset” our organs’ functionality and to lower stress levels.

Our oral health is dependent on a strong immune system, healthy organs, and a nourishing overall well-being. As studies have shown poor oral health to be connected to serious health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, it is crucial that all aspects of our dental and overall health are cared for.

In addition to proper brushing, flossing, and following a healthy diet, our oral health depends on between 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Let’s take a closer look at how lack of sleep affects our oral health.

Heightens Inflammation

Inflammation is described as the body’s response to fighting harmful “invaders” such as injuries, infections, and toxins. As the body requires adequate rest, lack of sleep can send a message to your immune system to begin an inflammatory response. This sees the release of proteins, antibodies, and an increase of blood supply sent to the site, including the gums.

Increases Risk for Gum Problems

This same defending response can increase the risk for gum issues. One common gum issue is known as gingivitis. While this form of gum inflammation is caused by a buildup of plaque, the bacteria associated with gingivitis can be stimulated by lack of sleep.

Causes Periodontitis

The gum disease periodontitis is the next stage of gingivitis. This form of the gum disease sees inflammation of the gumline as well as the bones that hold the teeth in place. It is important to have professional dental treatments to avoid losing teeth as well as bone loss of the jaw. Lack of sleep enhances this condition.

Causes Dry Mouth

Dry mouth, particularly at night can disrupt sleep and vice versa. As some cases of dry mouth are seen with particular prescription drugs, ageing and health conditions, treatment of dry mouth can be challenging. For those with poor sleeping habits, dry mouth can be an unexpected issue.

Weakens Your Immune System
