Get Professional Tooth Whitening for the Best Results

Everyone wants a dazzling, 100-watt smile, but any number of factors, such as drinking coffee or wine and even getting older, can cause your pearly whites to start to lose some of their lustre. Restore that look with a tooth whitening from Princeview Dental.

You may have heard a lot about tooth whitening over the years but not know how the process works. Tooth whitening isn’t new; it’s been around since ancient Rome. We’ve all seen the commercials for tooth whitening kits and know how those work, but you may not know about professional tooth whitening.

Before having a professional tooth whitening done, we recommend undergoing a thorough dental examination with Princeview Dental. From there, we will use a whitening shade guide to determine the current colour of your teeth and what other colour levels might be possible to obtain; this typically varies from two to seven shades. The effects of teeth whitening can last up to several months, so you don’t want your teeth to look too white!

When you undergo in-office tooth whitening at our practice in Etobicoke, we will take the time to treat your gums so you do not experience any possible side effects of the tooth whitening procedure. For example, since we are treating your teeth with bleach, we will need to paint a protective layer on the gums first.

Our team of experts will then apply the bleaching gel to your teeth, making sure that your experience is comfortable and pleasant. You may experience increased sensitivity to heat and/or cold for one to three days following the tooth whitening procedure, but we can provide something to help decrease the sensitivity. If you already have sensitive teeth, you should carefully consider undergoing tooth whitening in the first place.

There are several other reasons a professional tooth whitening may not be right for you. For starters, while tooth whitening will not change the colour of fillings, it may restore colour to porcelain caps that have been stained by smoking, food, or drinks. Even if you’re considering using an over-the-counter tooth whitening kit, we recommend consulting with us first.

If you have  white spot decalcification on your teeth, it may become more visible if you have a tooth whitening performed; however, the spots will start to fade if you undergo several more procedures. That’s why if you are suffering from tooth decay or gum disease, you should not undergo the tooth whitening procedure.

Princeview Dental also doesn’t recommend that children under the age of 16 undergo tooth whitening, since the pulp chamber, or nerve of the tooth, is enlarged at those ages and may lead to sensitivity. Pregnant and lactating women should also not undergo tooth whitening.
